IN RODDY Doyle's novel The Van, one of the owners of a mobile fish and chip shop sums up the Republic of Ireland's raucous 1990 World Cup campaign succinctly: "We beat England one-all, we lost to Egypt nil-all, an' we drew with the Dutch."
