For blotch-free application, hair removal should be done at least 24 hours earlier, says Meagan Johnson, national sales manager of Faken It. "Waxing and shaving will leave the skin pores open and applying fake tan will cause a slightly speckled appearance," she says. "For best results, shower and exfoliate, paying special attention to elbows, knees and heels." Skin should be free of any moisturiser, deodorant, make-up or perfumes as these will change the pH balance of your skin and prevent even absorption.
Read directions carefully and don't apply too much lotion to elbows, heels and feet. "And always wash hands after applying," says Johnson. "Tanned palms are not a good look." After applying fake tan, wear loose clothing, advises Johnson. No bras, jeans or tight-fitting dresses. Colour should start developing in two to three hours and will take 24 hours to reach its full effect. To prolong the life of your tan, don't shower for six to eight hours after application, moisturise daily and avoid long baths, hot spas and lengthy swims.Once your tan starts to fade, it may become patchy. Exfoliate with body scrub or glove to even out the colour. "Sunscreen should still be applied while outdoors," says Johnson.-- Claire Halliday
